'LactApp': a breastfeeding expert in your pocket in the form of a mobile application

Babies are born prepared to breastfeed and most do well right after birth, but not all. Not all, because not all deliveries are equal and because not all of us receive them in the same way, and this can affect suction.

If we talk about mothers, not everyone knows how to breastfeed, because breastfeeding a baby is not something is instinctive, but something you learn when you see other women breastfeed. And let's not say if there are problems: to put a solution you have to know the possible problems and the possible solutions, and this is a transmission from mothers to daughters that a few decades ago broke down when we became the babies that mostly drink bottles, and not breast .

This causes many women to have problems with breastfeeding and to look for people and professionals who can help them, sometimes as soon as possible: there are lactations that cannot wait for days, and sometimes, when they have been suffering for a long time, it is a matter of hours or minutes . For situations like this, for mothers who need help and who want to try some solution before going to someone expert, or before buying a bottle and artificial milk, there is 'LactApp', an application for iOS and Android that serves as a breastfeeding expert in your pocket.

Direct from the head of Alba Padró

Years ago, many years ago, Alba Padró is the lactation consultant for the breastfeeding groups "Alba Breastfeeding" that has the mobile phone on top. They are voluntary breastfeeding support groups, who in their eagerness to help women breastfeed decided to make a call service possible for the most urgent consultations, and she is the person behind that phone.

But now she is not an advisor, but IBCLC (also for a few years), which stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, which is the only official degree that proves that a person or health professional is a breastfeeding specialist.

As well, Lactapp born from the collaboration of Alba Padró, María Berruezo and Joan Serrano, and it has become a completely unique mobile application, because it adapts the answers to the personal situation of the mother who is using the application. In other words, according to the moment, according to the symptoms, different mothers may receive different solutions to the same problem or the same symptoms. Moreover, to receive solutions to possible problems, the application needs to know the baby's age to adapt the answers.

More than 2,300 personalized responses

Look at how complex breastfeeding can be, and what the variety of associated problems, or doubts, that the application has more than 2,300 answers In order to be as personalized as possible. Obviously it is still a mobile application and is not intended to replace the direct attention of an external person, which will always be ideal; However, it can be very useful for those mothers who do not have close to any expert or whose attention could be delayed for different reasons.

In addition, it offers some tests so that we can assess how breastfeeding is going, or if there could be a problem that would necessitate a medical visit. These tests are related to the first days of the baby, the first month, with the possibility of having a short brace, if you are sucking well or if you are already prepared to start with complementary feeding.

The application is free and you can download it in both the Apple AppStore and the Google PlayStore.

I have used it on some occasions out of curiosity, to test it and even to solve some doubts, and I can only recommend it. Also, coming from Alba Padró, who do I consider my header IBCLC (I always ask him when I don't know how to continue in the most complicated cases that I see in the nursing office), my confidence in this app is absolute. Moreover, I wish there had been something like this in the first months of breastfeeding my older and middle children, when it was hard to know why it didn't quite go well.
