The number of pregnant Americans who use marijuana to treat nausea continues to increase

One of the symptoms that women suffer most during pregnancy are nausea and vomiting, which is why many seek natural remedies that help them treat them and are less bothersome. A year ago, we shared that in the United States the use of marijuana to reduce morning sickness was beginning to increase.

Although medical professionals have warned about the use of marijuana during pregnancy, The number of women who use it to treat their nausea continues to grow.

According to a study conducted in California and published in The JAMA Network, from 2009 to 2016 the percentage of women who smoked marijuana to control nausea increased from 4.2% to 7.1%.

To reach this result, data from 318,085 pregnant women who were in the California health system were used. It was found that the young women were the ones who smoked the most marijuana during pregnancy:

  • In the pregnant women between 25 and 34 years old, increased from 3.4% to 5.1%
  • In the pregnant women between 18 and 24 years old, increased from 9.8% to 19%.
  • In the pregnant women under 18, increased its use from 12.5% to 21.8%.

These results are worrisome, as the use of marijuana during pregnancy is linked to various problems, such as low birth weight, premature births, smaller babies and even fetal death. In addition, newborns of mothers who used marijuana may have higher risks of memory and attention disorders, as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the main psychoactive constituent of cannabis, can pass through the placenta.

Recall that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists discourages the use of marijuana by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. To try to control the nausea there are other measures that we can take and care that we can take with our diet during pregnancy.
