They relate the mother's obesity with congenital defects in the baby

We have talked many times about the importance of the mother having an adequate weight before becoming pregnant to avoid problems during pregnancy.

But not only for his own health, but for that of the baby that is forming in his belly, since as it has been known thanks to an important study on the subject, obese women are more likely that their children have some congenital malformations such as spina bifida, certain hernias or limb defects.

Although research already pointed to obesity as a possible responsible for complications in pregnancy and certain deformities in the baby, the study, which has analyzed 14,300 births and has been published in the specialized journal Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, has confirmed that Obese women are twice as likely to have a child with spina bifida, a neural tube defect that is recorded in one in every 1,000 births.

Although it is not known what are the causes that cause them, it was also observed that the mother's obesity is related to six other defects: heart defects, anorectal atresia (the opening of the anus is blocked), hypospadias (urethral malformation) , limb defects (shortening or lack of fingers, legs or arms), diaphragmatic hernia (the abdominal organs 'migrate' to the thoracic cavity) and omphalocele (another type of hernia).

However, researchers do not want to be alarmists and point out that the results should be interpreted with caution while waiting for new studies to corroborate them.

To increase the chances of suffering from these congenital defects and for other reasons, pregnancy in women suffering from obesity is considered a risk pregnancy, in addition to the complications that may occur in childbirth, without naming the added predisposition that your child also suffer obesity in the future.

The reasons are really serious. Therefore, prevention is essential, that is, to stop obesity before conception to have a healthy pregnancy.
