Relationship between weight before pregnancy and gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a disorder that usually appears in the second half of pregnancy caused by the inability of some mothers to correctly regulate blood sugar levels due to the action of pregnancy hormones.

Once the baby is born the diabetes disappears, but while the baby is developing it must be strictly controlled to avoid premature delivery or damage to the fetus such as malformations and even death.

It remains one of the important problems to avoid during pregnancy, which is why scientists investigate possible relationships with the disease.

One of the latest studies linked to this issue is a study conducted in the United States that showed that the risk of gestational diabetes was multiplied by 2.5 in those women who gained weight between 2 and 10 kilos a year during the 5 years before pregnancy.

As we always say, it is a study and should not be taken to the letter. That is, if we have gained a couple of kilos in the five years prior to pregnancy, which happens to many women, it does not mean that we will develop gestational diabetes, there are many other factors that also influence its appearance such as the age of mother or the habits of life that are taken. He is talking about gaining between 2 and 10 kilos a year, that is to say that he speaks of a woman who at least gained 10 kilos in the last 5 years. And that is enough.

Anyway, what this study wants to suggest is that it is very important to acquire healthy habits not only during pregnancy but even before, since being overweight, even if it is prior to pregnancy, can negatively influence the baby's health.
