Half of hyperactive children will continue to be adults

In the LVII National Congress of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP) that has been held these days in Santiago de Compostela it becomes clear again the importance of early detection and diagnosis of hyperactivity disorders in boys and girls

The figures speak for themselves: one in two hyperactive children will continue to be so in adulthood, so not attending them in the short and long term with proper treatment is a serious mistake that will lead to a serious problem in the future, as aggressiveness or risk of drug use.

This has been said by Dr. Manuel Katz, speaker of the Congress and expert in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It becomes necessary act as soon as possible to avoid major complications both in childhood, as in adolescence and adulthood.

And, according to Dr. Katz, the adult person who has not been treated for this pathology will be much more prone to aggressiveness, you will have many more relationship disorders, you can smoke more and drink alcohol, you have a much higher risk of using drugs and traffic accidents, you will divorce 3-4 times more than the rest of the population and change jobs 3-4 more times.

As we know, ADHD is a disorder that involves a problem at the level of the central nervous system and the child's behavior. The importance of its diagnosis lies, also, in its difficulty, and there are many undiagnosed hyperactive children and many cases in which it is confused with other similar disorders but in reality it is not ADHD.

Another key aspect of the disease, as experts have announced, is its potent genetic basis. It is considered a hereditary picture in almost 90 percent of cases.

In any case, we hope that awareness about the importance of diagnosis and treatment of the disorder is increasingly extended to avoid serious complications in adulthood.
