Controversy about the birth of octillizos

Yesterday we echoed the amazing birth of little octillizos in California that everyone is talking about, and certainly many fertility experts who uncover the controversy about the safety of this type of multiple births.

Although it has not been confirmed that babies have been conceived by assisted reproduction, they say that it is practically impossible for the conception of eight embryos to occur naturally. If we assume that there has been medical intervention, it is an extreme example of the growing number of multiple pregnancies caused by fertility treatments.

When a couple undergoes a treatment it is to have a child or two, at most three, but not eight, although the possible consequences are accepted. The surprise will have been great for both parents and doctors.

Edgardo Young, professor of human reproduction of the UBA (University of Buenos Aires) explains that "in cases of assisted reproduction the arrival of eight babies is an unintended consequence", it even describes it as "bad praxis".

Like other experts, he believes that there should be no triplets as well as quintuplets, because when doing an assisted reproduction treatment and seeing that the woman can get to ovulate more than two ovules, the treatment should be suspended for the sake of future babies.

In the case of the California triplets everything went well, for now there is a happy ending because the eight babies, weighing between 680 and 1470 grams, progress favorably. However, in addition to being a risky pregnancy for the mother, the greatest risk is borne by the little ones because they are born with very low weight, premature babies and with many possibilities of suffering sequelae in the future. Is it necessary to put women and babies at risk? Can it be prevented in any way? Should it be prevented?

What do you think?
