Soft drinks: fructose contributes to obesity

We already know that the excess sugar in juices and soft drinks is associated with childhood overweight. Fructose is one of the most commonly used sweeteners in soft drinks and juices, and its consumption has always been linked to beneficial effects because its intake did not increase insulin production, unlike glucose and other carbohydrates.

Now fructose has turned out not to be as healthy as it seemed. Excessive intake of sugary sodas with fructose accelerates the onset of obesity and other metabolic alterations harmful to the organism, according to a preclinical study carried out by specialists from the Center for Biomedical Research in Pathophysiology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn).

Juices and soft drinks are present in the daily diet of many children, and constitute a quick resource to "complement" lunches or snacks, but they are not as healthy as they might seem.

Now this new danger is added to those already known. Research has revealed that the intake of sugary liquid in abundant amounts over a prolonged period of time develops an organism's resistance to leptin, a hormone that regulates the level of blood lipids.

In this way, Fructose added to processed foods (in the form of sucrose and syrup) can cause overweight, since it is capable of deteriorating the body's energy compensation system, making it difficult to assimilate calories.

In children and adolescents, this metabolic disorder is worrying, which is also more pronounced when used to sweeten liquids than solids (pastry products)

We should not think that the fructose contained in the fruit would lead to this same conclusion, since the fructose that appears concentrated in 2 liters of sugary refreshing drink would be equivalent to that containing 20 liters of natural fruit juice.

Natural fruit is undoubtedly still the best option, for children and for the whole family, because while eliminating gases, fats, preservatives, sweeteners and other artificial ingredients present in soft drinks and juices, we receive all the benefits of "fresh" vitamins. A healthy and natural energy.
