Babies and children under four, more vulnerable to the flu

If we had already entered some communities in the flu epidemic phase, in the next four weeks a rebound in flu cases is expected due to the low temperatures in Spain. Among the most vulnerable population are infants and children under four years old.

Precisely they are the ones that are filling out the consultations and hospitals in the last weeks, and there, above all what I could do is rule out complications of the flu such as otitis or pneumonia.

Specialists advise that children with the flu should not go to daycare centers or schools and not come into contact with another of the most vulnerable groups, that of the elderly.

The age group with the highest number of cases is that of people over 64 (32%), followed by the group from one to four years (26%). Among the risk factors that produce more complications, chronic lung disease and diabetes stand out.

The epidemic level occurs when there are more than 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In the coming weeks a rebound is expected because, after the cold wave and some containment at the time of leaving (the contagion does not spread even if the virus continues to act), people begin to live normal life, and with the agglomerations the contagion increases

Given that the spread of influenza has reached epidemic levels in fourteen autonomous communities (all but the Balearic Islands, Cantabria and Extremadura) during the last days, it is expected that cases will be especially noticeable throughout the country.

We hope to get rid of this year from the dreaded flu, and in the meantime remember that there are tips that help prevent the spread of the flu: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or wash your hands frequently, as well as avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
