IPad can cause nickel allergies in children

Nickel is a compound that can be found in many electronic devices such as laptops, mobile phones, console controls, etc., to which some children are allergic. These children should also avoid contact with some zippers, earrings or dental pieces, since they also have nickel.

Contact with the mentioned objects is usually occasional and mild reactions, however there is an element that children can hold in their hands for longer and that It is related to an increase in allergic reactions in children: the iPad.

The iPad and its back

Two dermatologists from the University of California decided to write an article based on the case of an 11-year-old boy who after several months with allergy symptoms on his hands, and after trying several treatments, began to improve when someone began to suspect the known tablet.

They tested him, saw that he was allergic to nickel and from there they began looking for elements of his daily life that had him. Finally, they realized that the cause was the family iPad, whose rear surface contains a high concentration of nickel.

This led dermatologists to publish their article in the magazine Pediatrics, warning that many of the growing cases of allergic contact dermatitis (explain that they are increasingly prevalent) could come from nickel exposures, because of contact with devices that contain it.

An easy solution problem

The funny thing is that the problem has an easy solution. The boy ended up in the hospital tired of his dermatitis that had gone from bad to worse. Knowing that it was the fault of contact with the iPad, there were two possible solutions: not to take the iPad anymore or not to touch it more. And they opted for the second. A simple case put on the device prevents children from touching the nickel and with this simple solution the child began to improve.

Only the iPad?

No, as we have explained, there are many sources of nickel, but like the iPad, at least the 2010 model, which is the one the child had, has such concentration, the reactions are very severe. But if a child has symptoms (itching, scabs and redness) and does not have this tablet, it will be necessary to see what he takes with his hands to determine what is the cause.
