Campaign to withdraw VAT from diapers

Already in 2005 the Spanish Government requested to Europe the reduction of this tax to 4%, and now, the Union of Consumers of Catalonia and UGT have joined in a campaign to demand that they stop applying VAT to diapers, to those who apply 16%, same as the tax that applies to luxury items.

The expenses that the diapers cause in the families, suppose an average of 500 euros annual, being an article of first necessity, we agree that the taxes should not be applied.

We are not going to go into politics or at the time when VAT was applied in our country (which in principle was a temporary tax), but it seems that they do it on purpose to flood us with extra expenses, then complain that the birth rate It is low, when housing is impossible, wages are closer to those of ten years ago (the minimum interprofessional salary stands at 570.6 euros this year, which goes in diapers), etc. It is incomprehensible that they find differences between diapers and compresses, tampons and salvaslips that have a VAT of 7%, although when the tax on these items was reduced, the price rose 0.8%.

Anyway, hopefully this new campaign is not broken and extends to all communities. Baby diapers are a must-have item and should be prescribed by the pediatrician, just as those prescribed by adults, or failing that, that there would be direct subsidies to the companies that sell them. What do you think?
